Seedlings handled with care

Lovely winter rain in the Clanwilliam region during the past weeks make it possible for farmers to plant out the tiny little seedlings.  Due to the fact that these seedlings are not irrigated in the fields, farmers have to plant the seedlings in the fields during the rain season.

Most of the farmers do plant the seedlings by hand.  a Backbroking work!   a Hard worker can plant up to 4000 seedlings a day.  The sandy soil must be wet enough to make some holes for the seedlings.  These tiny little seedlings is about 10cm in height with a tap root of double the length.  It is this tap root that reach deep into the sandy soil for nutritions and water to survive in the dry, hot summer months.
