Is this the natural colour?

Purple seed - not in nature!  Rooibos seed is a light grey colour and very difficult to find in the sandy soil.  But that is not the reason why it is purple.

Being part of the fynbos plants, the seeds need to burn to germinate.  The seed has a hard shell and in nature only germinate after the fires burnt it away.

In the industry the seeds are collected and then chemical treated to get rid of the hard shell.  Organic farmers though do not use any chemicals in this process.

It is this chemicals that colour the seeds.  And the wine bottle?  Well, it is used to sow the seeds in the nursery.  Sowing season is during March and the seedlings are kept in the nursery till July.
