Geographic Indication

Aspalathus linearis is the second South African product to receive GI status.  The first was wine and spirits.

Geographic Indication status of Rooibos means that the name belongs to the Western Cape region, South Africa and can't be trademark by any company/person.  It is like Champagne or Port.  Rooibos only grow in the Cederberg region, South Africa and should any person be successful in cultivating aspalathus linearis outside the Westerncape, South Africa, they won't be allowed to call the product Rooibos.
